The development of a new brand

Bringing a vision to life

The Flotta Hydrogen Hub is a proposed green hydrogen production and export facility on the island of Flotta in Orkney. The multi-billion pound project would make use of a repurposed area of the existing Flotta Terminal and would be powered by offshore wind projects. If successful, the Hub would deliver significant quantities of hydrogen and create employment opportunities in Orkney and beyond.

Plans to power the proposed Flotta Hydrogen Hub are being developed by OWPL in partnership with Flotta Terminal’s owner Repsol Sinopec, and Uniper, a leading international energy company and pioneer in the field of hydrogen. The proposal is also supported by EMEC (The European Marine Investment Centre), who approached us to create a proposal for developing an entire brand for the Flotta Hydrogen Hub.

The brand had to communicate the value and the benefits that the project would deliver on a local and national level.

We were also asked to develop a website, which would be an essential part of the ScotWind bid process. Our proposal was appealing to both public and government decision makers, and we were awarded the branding contract.

Imagining a future through design

The Flotta Hydrogen Hub brand had to be more than a logo. Our challenge was to develop an identity that would stand out in the competitive hydrogen market. The Hub required a clear brand that closely aligned with the nearby West of Orkney and East of Orkney Wind Farm proposal.

As part of the project, we had to create a visually engaging CMS-managed website that could be updated as the proposal progressed. We had to recommend domain names and website hosting and provide a maintenance support package to provide technical support, updates and upgrades.

The project involved creating a compelling CGI image to depict how the future renewables site might look, to be used on the website and in promotional material. We also had to produce two infographics showing how the Flotta Hub would be supplied with green energy from offshore wind farms, and how the hydrogen might be exported by ship or pipeline.

Developing a brand narrative through collaboration

To develop a recognisable identity, we organised a brand discovery session with key stakeholders. During the workshop, we identified the unique values and benefits of the project and discussed how to communicate them as part of a focused and inspiring narrative.

To ensure the Flotta Hydrogen Hub would be a legacy brand, it had to look and act differently from the rest of the hydrogen brandscape. So, we researched comparable projects and reviewed audience personas to inform our creative direction.

From the discovery session, a competitive brand positioning was developed, which included a brand narrative, logo style and full brand guidelines.

Creating significant economic opportunity

Thanks to our efforts and the contributions of the project partners, the Flotta Hydrogen Hub was successful in the ScotWind bid and the project was approved, creating a significant economic opportunity for Orkney and for Scotland.

We developed a unique brand for the Flotta Hydrogen Hub, alongside a new website, CGI images, and infographics. The partners were very impressed that we managed to create a confident visual identity that communicated the value and the vision of the project.
